2 People Taken Out of House by Ladder During 3-Alarm Fire in Lynn, Massachusetts

Officials were on scene of a 3-alarm fire in Lynn, Massachusetts early Wednesday morning. The fire was burning at a home on 18 Estes Street.

Cleanup is under way, but Lynn Fire Chief Jim McDonald said there was heavy fire out of the rear of the home when crews arrived shortly before 3 a.m.

Six people live in the wood frame structure, but only five of them were home at the time of the fire. All were able to get out safely, although two of them had to be taken out of the house by ladder.

At first crews were concerned that the sixth person might be trapped inside but that was not the case and she was located.

The fire moved quickly to three alarms because of the congested nature of the neighborhood and the construction of the building.

"The age of the building, the fire got into the walls. There are so many void spaces in buildings of this era. It's heavy, thick wood, so it's hard to open up in the walls and the ceiling, so they're hard to get through and access the void spaces," said Chief McDonald when discussing the difficulties of fighting this fire.

Officials believe the fire started in a first floor bedroom before quickly moving to the second floor and the attic.

Salem, Revere, and Saugus Fire assisted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
