Firefighters spend hours battling blaze at Newton home

No one was living in the home at the time and no workers were inside when the fire broke out

Fire broke out at a home undergoing renovations in Newton, Massachusetts, Wednesday.

Newton firefighters responded to the home on Central Avenue around noon. A contractor working don't he home said they were doing major renovations - which were almost complete - when the fire broke out. It took hours to bring it under control, with flames popping back up again and again as plumes of dark smoke wafted in the air.

No one was living in the home at the time and no workers were inside.

Neighbor Robert DeSantis was dismayed to see the large response as crews worked from the outside to try to contain the blaze.

"It is really sad because I was really happy to see it come back to what I used to see it with my father driving around the neighborhood," DeSantis said.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately clear.
