There were 196 brush fires reported in the state this October, more than 10 times as many as the monthly average, which is 15, according to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.

As dry weather continues, firefighters are battling brush fires in Monson, Spencer, Middleton and other communities.

Friday’s weather did not help as crews continue to fight a brush fire that has scorched nearly 190 acres.

Another warm afternoon is on tap, with temperatures returning to the mid to upper 70s again. It’s always great to get a few warm days this late in the season, but unfortunately, much of the region is dealing with drought conditions, which has led to numerous brush fires cropping up, especially over the past week.  Friday will be no different....
