Tim Walz and JD Vance on Tuesday went after each other’s running mates in a vice presidential debate that opened with a discussion of burgeoning domestic and international troubles.

In closing statements on Tuesday, vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance pitched themselves to America’s voters as the election nears.

When asked about the Jan. 6 insurrection, JD Vance defended former President Donald Trump on handling a peaceful transfer of power, while Tim Walz accused Trump of misusing his power to discredit the election. “A president’s words matter.”

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz advocated for federal family leave policies. “A federal program of paid family medical leave… will enhance our workforce, enhance our families, and make it easier to have the children that you want.”

When asked about gun control, Tim Walz talked about the importance of red flag laws and universal background check to reduce gun violence. “We understand that the second amendment is there, but our first responsibility is to our kids.”

When asked about abortion, JD Vance defended hospitals’ autonomy to not practice abortions, while Tim Walz argued Republicans are distorting birth control laws.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz highlighted his record of supporting reproductive health care and abortion rights during his tenure as Minnesota’s governor, contrasting his record with the Republican agenda to restrict abortion rights. “In Minnesota, we are ranked first in health care for a reason,” Walz said. “We trust women, we trust doctors.”
