Salem, Mass. Shooting Suspect Dead, Victim Hospitalized

The shooter is dead and the victim is hospitalized, authorities said

There was a major crime scene near 3 Technology Way in Salem, Massachusetts Monday night as police investigated an attempted murder-suicide.

“Police responded to the scene and 911 calls and found a 55-year-old male who was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Salem police say the got multiple 911 calls just at 5:07 p.m.

But before turning the gun on himself, investigators say that man shot a 33-year-old woman in the head.

“It looks like she’s received at least one gunshot wound to the head. How serious it is is unknown but she was med-evaced to Boston,” said Lucas Miller, the Salem Police Chief.

Investigators say the suspect waited for her as she left work at a sail making shop in the industrial park.

The suspect’s body was found in a wooded area near the scene.

Chief Miller believes they victim and suspect were known to each other, but the exact nature of their relationship is unknown.

“Best indication is that they’re from New Hampshire," Miller said. "They were known to each other and a firearm was recovered from the scene." Lucas.

Police also focused part of their investigation on a UHaul near the scene.

Scott Hyde works for a construction company next to the sail making company where the victim works.

“They make the sails for the big race boats…the workers are all very nice over there. It’s scary,” he said.

Some businesses were ordered to shelter in place following the shooting and roads were closed off.
