Investigators believe that a father, mother, son and his friend were all at the home helping the father move out.

Police have identified the mother and wife as Michelle Cote, 55, of Colchester, the father and husband as David Cote, 59, from Wolcott and the son as 34-year-old David Cote Jr., of Colchester.

Michelle Cote worked at the Cheshire Correctional Institution, according to the state Department of Correction.

They said she was a correctional identification and record specialist who had been hired in October 1998.

3 people found dead inside Wolcott home: police
A mother, father and son are dead after a dispute broke out inside of a Wolcott home Thursday evening, police said.

Michelle Cote, who has been estranged for over a year, was inside the home with David Cote Sr. when an argument broke out. David Cote Jr., and his friend were outside when it happened, and they immediately ran inside to help the mother, according to police.

David Cote Sr. allegedly had a gun pointed at the mother. That's when the son tried to intervene to protect his mom, who was knocked down on the ground, police said.

The son tried to grab the gun from his father, but the father broke free and shot the mother, who later died, according to authorities.

Police said the father then shot his son, who also died.

Shortly after, the son's friend, who is a registered gun owner, pulled out his gun and shot the father before calling 911. Police said they will not identify the friend until the investigation is complete.

The mother, father and son all died at the scene, according to police.

The police department said the mother owned the home and the father was being evicted. The house had been sold and Cote needed to be out by April 1. The had dozens of weapons in the home and may have been living there without heat, according to police.

Police Chief Edward Stephens said the incident is "very unfortunate for everyone involved," and said the friend is shaken up by what transpired.

The friend is cooperating with investigators, but Stephens said the shooting death of the father was "a matter of self defense."

The police chief said Wolcott is a quiet town with a relatively low number of homicides.

Officials said there's no threat to the public at this time. Authorities are conducting an investigation.
