When police arrived, they found one victim suffering from a stab wound in the chest, and a second victim with multiple stab wounds.

Both victims were transported to Boston Medical Center, where the first man was pronounced dead from his wounds. That man was identified Thursday at 33-year-old Ronald Reed.

The other man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Vega-Castro is charged with murder, assault to murder and a warrant for violation of probation. He was ordered held without bail following his arraignment Thursday in Roxbury District Court.

Prosecutors said in court Thursday that Vega-Castro assaulted the victims' neighbor, leading the surviving victim to become involved with an altercation. Reed intervened and was stabbed by Castro.

Vega-Castro was represented by attorney Claudia Lagos. His next scheduled court date is March 2.

Police said they found Vega-Castro using the coordinates of the GPS monitor he had been ordered to wear following his release on bail in a 2021 case out of Dorchester for breaking and entering. He was placed under arrest following a motor vehicle stop.

“This was a senseless act of violence that stole one man’s life, left another man injured and forever changed the lives of those impacted and their loved ones. It has also traumatized the community and those who witnessed this tragic act of violence,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “I’m grateful to the community members who came forward to assist in this investigation, and to the members of law enforcement who acted with diligence to identify, locate and apprehend this individual.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
