An 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest outside a Dollar General store in southern New Hampshire on Thursday night, officials said.

The incident began about 8:26 p.m. near the store on Wilton Road in Milford, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office Officers called to the scene for gunfire found evidence of multiple gunshots in the parking lot. They were led to the rear of the property, where they found a man dead, apparently from a gunshot wound.

A firearm was also recovered at the scene, authorities said.

The man who died was identified Friday afternoon as Gage Cassen, of Derry. Medical examiners found he was shot once in the chest, according to prosecutors, who initially said he was shot in the back.

No arrests have been announced.

Investigators are asking for the public's assistance. Anyone who was in the area of the Dollar General parking lot or saw or heard the gunshots is asked to contact the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit at 603-223-3856 or MCU@dos.nh.gov.

"At the time that this 911 call came in, the store was still open," Senior Assistant Attorney General Benjamin Agati said. "There were customers inside, there were definitely people who were out in the parking lot. That is obviously of great concern to us, to identify exactly what happened and who else was there."

Agati said officers were canvassing area businesses on Friday morning in search of any surveillance video that could provide clues about what might have motivated the shooting.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation, the attorney general's office said.
