The Boston School Committee voted in favor of closing the West Roxbury Education Complex at the end of the current school year.
The complex houses West Roxbury Academy and Urban Science Academy.
Wednesday night's vote was 5 in favor and 1 abstention, which was cast by Committee member Regina Robinson.
The school system says this move is part of the billion-dollar Build Boston Public Schools plan.
Boston Public Schools Interim Superintendent Laura Perille issued a statement following the vote, calling the decision a "difficult" one.
"The deterioration of the infrastructure of the West Roxbury Education Complex necessitated the difficult decision to close West Roxbury Academy and Urban Science Academy," Perille said. "The Boston Public Schools will remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that current students within these schools are supported throughout this transition. We will continue to engage with families, teachers, and the students to plan and execute a thoughtful and responsible transition into new BPS school communities for each individual student."
Parents and students had protested the proposal of closing the two high schools, saying it was unfair to students and left their education in limbo.
