A car collided with a Burlington police cruiser, sending both the driver and officer to local hospitals Sunday night.

The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. in the area of 276 Cambridge Street (Route 3A).

Burlington police say a 31-year-old Boston woman was driving a 2017 Nissan Altima when she collided with a marked Burlington police SUV being driven by an officer who was on patrol in the area.

The woman's car continued after the collision, went off the road and struck a commercial building.

The woman and police officer were both taken by ambulance to local hospitals with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows the police officer was traveling on the northbound side of Route 3A when the woman, who was traveling south, crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with the officer's cruiser.

Route 3A is closed while the scene remains active, and drivers are being asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Burlington police set up detours to divert traffic from the area.

The building that the woman crashed into sustained damage, and the town building inspector was called to respond.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
