A young boy fell from a window in Boston late Wednesday night, but survived the fall and was out of the hospital within a day.

The 5-year-old is believed to have fallen from a three-story apartment building on Calumet Street in the city's Mission Hill neighborhood, according to Boston police. A window screen could be seen on the ground just outside of the garage door.

Relatives of the little boy told NBC10 Boston that he and his parents were in town from Ohio visiting family when the accident happened.

Relatives rushing the boy to the hospital were met by Boston EMS, who took the 5-year-old to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where those relatives said he was doing great. He was released from the hospital by Wednesday afternoon.

Boston police were on scene for quite some time investigating overnight after initially arriving at the scene around 10:15 p.m. There was a minivan parked in front of the garage door outside the window where the child fell, according to several witnesses.

Two witnesses who were walking by at the time told police they saw a screen fall out of a window and then saw a child fall out, landing on a car below. One of those witnesses said a man then ran outside the apartment, grabbed the child and put him inside a vehicle and pulled out of the driveway.

“We heard some screaming, we heard a loud thud originally,” said neighbor Ethan Baram.

When Boston police got on scene, they said they spoke with the driver of that vehicle, who told them they were driving the child to the hospital.

Police believe this was likely just an accident, but they are mandated to notify the state Department of Children and Families.

The circumstances leading up to the child’s fall and what may have caused it remained under investigation early Thursday. Boston police said they believe the child leaned against the window screen and fell out.

Neighbors said it was concerning to see so many emergency vehicles in the normally quiet neighborhood.

"I was walking down to the gym at around 10:30 at night and starting right at this point in the corner there, there were about 10 cop cars, a lot of sirens and everything," said Nolan Hawkins, a neighbor. "I saw what looked to be parents talkin to police outside of either that house or that house over there."
