In the middle of quiet weather for most of us, there’s still so much going on in the weather: drought, frost, and powerful waves from a hurricane to name a few.
Starting with the drought, this week we received our weekly update from the government and university group that assesses drought across the country weekly, and our severe drought not only continues for the Boston to Worcester corridor but has been upgraded to an extreme drought for Southeast MA and RI with viewers reporting wells drying up near the South Coast and also to the north in Central NH.
As for frost, Saturday dawned with a hard freeze as far south as the Monadnock Region, but no frost in most of Southern New England...though Saturday and Sunday nights will be colder with a frost expected just about to the Interstate 95 corridor, so gardeners should cover plants to protect them. Daytime high temperatures both Saturday and Sunday not only will be cool at near 60 degrees, but a fresh northerly breeze will create a wind chill factor in the 50s both afternoons, even at the warmest time of day.
The wind may ease a bit Monday but another cool day is expected, while attention turns to the coast. In addition to high tide levels owing to a new moon, resulting in pockets of minor coastal flooding at high tide in typically vulnerable areas the next few days, Major Hurricane Teddy will take aim at Nova Scotia with a Tuesday evening arrival. Well ahead of the storm, ocean swell will build on our New England waters and beaches, increasing Sunday and reaching a peak of 10 to 20 feet late Tuesday, with over 50 foot seas possible in the fertile fishing waters of the Scotian Slopes and the Grand Banks.
By midweek, seas subside and temperatures moderate, rising into the 70s ahead of what looks to be a nice weekend of weather next weekend in our exclusive First Alert 10-day forecast.
