1 Seriously Burned in Fire at Apartment Complex in Rutland, Mass.

Boston police are looking to bring criminal charges against one of Massachusetts’ most ardent advocates of the legalization of marijuana.

One person was severely burned and 50 people were displaced after a fire at an apartment complex in Rutland, Massachusetts, Friday afternoon.

The fire at the 24-unit Countryside Estates complex on Maple Avenue broke out around 2:30 p.m. Crews have since gotten it under control.

According to the Rutland fire chief, heavy fire was coming from a second-floor apartment, trapping some people on the second and third-floor balconies.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue those trapped. One trapped man was taken to UMass Medical with severe burns. Officials believe the fire started in his apartment due to careless disposal of smoking materials.

Several other people were treated outside for minor burns and bruises.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
