After nearly three months after he was shot in his native Dominican Republic, Red Sox legend David Ortiz continues to question the motive behind the incident and has hired a former Boston police commissioner to investigate.
Ortiz hired Ed Davis a few weeks after returning to Boston following emergency surgery in Santo Domingo, according to spokesperson Joe Baerlein.
"The Edward Davis Company is monitoring and analyzing information from various sources in the Dominican Republic around the motives for the shooting," Baerlein said in a statement.
The company is also providing security services for Ortiz and his family, Baerlein said.
The beloved slugger was seriously injured June 9 when gunman shot him at close range in his back. Surveillance footage from the scene shows people scattering from the crowded Dial Bar and Lounge as Ortiz hits the ground.
Dominican authorities determined the gunman mistook Ortiz for the intended target. This follows their initial statement that there was a $7,800 hit on the Red Sox great.
Ortiz is continuing to recover at home following a few surgeries, in which one called for the removal of his gallbladder and parts of his intestines. After receiving emergency treatment in Santo Domingo, Ortiz was flown to Boston to be further treated at Massachusetts General Hospital in their intensive care unit. He was discharged July 26.
Ortiz on Sunday published the first photographs of himself since the shooting on Instagram. In his photographs, he wishes his daughter Alex a good beginning to the school year ahead of her start at Berklee College of Music.
Fourteen men remain behind bars as they await their trials in connection to the shooting.
