A train carrying hazardous materials derailed Sunday morning in Framingham, Massachusetts, causing traffic delays that are expected to last until early Monday morning.

According to a statement from CSX, one of its trains was headed into the CP Framingham Yard around 10:10 a.m. when six railcars and one locomotive derailed near Route 135 and Waverly Street. Of those that derailed, initial reports indicate five were hazardous materials cars containing carbon dioxide, and one contained a nonhazardous material.

The locomotive and all railcars remain upright and intact, CSX said.

No leaks or injuries have been reported.

CSX said it is working closely with Framingham police and other first responders.

"The safety of the community and everyone on site is our top priority as we develop a plan to clear the cars and re-rail the track," the company said in its statement.

Drivers traveling eastbound on Route 135 are being diverted at Cedar Street, with those traveling westbound being detoured onto Concord Street, Route 126. Framingham police originally said on Twitter that they expected the street to be impassable until approximately 10 p.m., according to CSX. Around 8:30 p.m., Framingham police said CSX was waiting on specialized equipment to arrive on scene, and the new estimated time for the road to reopen is approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Police said the MBTA's Commuter Rail will remain open through Framingham, but there may be delays with only one track available.

Nilton Soares tells NBC10 Boston he was on the commuter rail Sunday night trying to get back to his Boston home when he got an alert on his phone that there would be possible delays of 30-40 minutes.

“30 to 40 minute delay so hopefully I can get back home because my dogs are waiting for me at home. So, I need to go back soon,” Soares said. "They probably want to go out and they’re all by themselves.”

Drivers reported an increase in their commutes, as well, as they tried to get to businesses in the area.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
