Effort Launched to Recall Mayor Facing Federal Charges

The future of Fall River’s mayor remains undecided following his arrest on federal fraud charges.

An effort is underway to recall the Massachusetts mayor charged with defrauding investors in an app he developed.

Fall River's city clerk tells the Herald News that a petition signed by 10 city residents to recall Mayor Jasiel Correia has been dropped off at her office.

The petition says Correia "is now tainted by federal indictments that cannot be ignored" which has potentially caused distrust in people doing business with the mayor or city.

Once the petition is notarized and the signees are certified as registered voters in the city, the recall group has 20 days to obtain signatures of 5 percent of the city's more than 50,000 registered voters.

The city council, which declined Tuesday to vote on Correia's future, would then have the option of scheduling a recall election.

Correia didn't respond to a request for comment, but he denied any wrongdoing Tuesday.
