This announcement is not in response to any specific plotting activity, but the FBI and Homeland Security said new intel they've obtained reveal there is a heightened threat of lone actor violence targeting holiday-related, faith-based gatherings, New Year's Eve and protests and demonstrations.
"We see that there is a robust reaction on both sides of the issue and with that emotion and energy is being unsavory conduct, said Todd McGhee, a retired Massachusetts State Police trooper who specializes in security analysis.

McGhee said he's not surprised. In fact, NBC10 Boston spoke with him two months ago when the FBI issued its first warning to the American public — days after the Hamas led attack on Israel that started the recent conflict.
Since then, the FBI has issued two more warnings.
"It's important that general public and understand this is information sharing that if there is anything else that is credible or of greater concern then other measures will be taken," said McGhee.
Law enforcement officials have also noted an increase in hoax bomb threats and active shooter threats targeting synagogues around the United States.
"Awareness is key, having that sense of continued vigilance is what is going to keep us safe," said McGhee.
According to FBI officials, this warning was not issued in response to a particular plotted event here in Massachusetts. They just urge that if you see something, say something.
