Gov. Chris Sununu Vetoes Another Voter Residency Bill

The bill aimed to overturn a rule that makes college students subject to residency requirements if they want to vote in New Hampshire

As expected, Republican Gov. Chris Sununu has vetoed another controversial bill related to voting rights.

The Democratically-controlled Legislature passed two bills this session to essentially negate a new law ending the state's distinction between domicile and residency for voting purposes. The change, passed under Republican control and currently being challenged in court, means out-of-state college students who vote in New Hampshire would also be subject to residency requirements, such as getting New Hampshire driver's licenses or registering their cars.

Sununu last month vetoed a House bill that would have repealed the new law. On Friday, he vetoed a Senate bill that would have created a carve-out from the motor vehicle requirements for students and other temporary residents.
