According to the MBTA, track conditions appear to be to blame as the investigation gets underway. The section of track was set to be replaced this summer.

Delays are expected as shuttles replace rail service after an MBTA train derailed.

"Preliminarily, the distance between the rails was not where it should have been so we are....how that happened, work to restore that will be done later today, possibly into the evening depending on the work we do to restore service," MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng told reporters at the scene Monday.

Aerial video showed about a half dozen emergency vehicles surrounding the train, which appears to be at least partially blocking the roadway. No one was hurt.

"Obviously we have a lot of work to do, the one thing I will say is that we had a speed restriction in place here, that is why no one was injured…and that just shows that we have a lot more to do, the team needs to pull together," he added.

The MBTA said delays should be expected as the buses are dispatched.

The incident was first reported by the MBTA at 1:54 p.m.
