Man's death prompts shelter-in-place order in Nashua, NH

First responders gathered near a police investigation in Nashua, New Hampshire, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024.

An incident in Nashua, New Hampshire, prompted a major police response and hourslong shelter-in-place order Wednesday.

Nashua police said the police response was for a 37-year-old man whom investigators would eventually learn died by suicide.

Family at the scene on Bellcrest Road reported hearing gunshots inside the home before officers arrived, according to police, and officers, who'd been called for a report of a suicidal male, secured the area around the home.

Investigators tried making contact with the person inside, then eventually sent a drone in, which confirmed that the man, who had died, was the only person inside, according to a statement from police, shared nearly five hours after the shelter-in-place announcement was made on social media.

"There were no other injuries reported as a result of this incident and we thank the public for their cooperation and understanding during these difficult incidents," police said in the statement.

They didn't publicly identify the man who died or share more about his apparent mental health crisis.
