Police were called to the parking lot, on Massachusetts Avenue, about 5:30 p.m., prosecutors said.

Authorities have given few details, but the owners of Sol Solecito Center, a bilingual day care and Spanish immersion learning center, say the young boy was one of its clients. They said his mother never dropped him off Tuesday morning, realizing when she returned to pick him up that she had left him in the back of the vehicle while she was at work.

"I trust these people with the lives of my children, which is the best I can say about them," said Jason Fligg, whose kids once attended the day care. "The program is impeccable."

"They're really nice, actually, the day care. They have a lot of little kids there," said Angela Truong, who works next door. "In the mornings, we see them bring the little kids outside for, like, walks."
