Workers have been busy clearing roads Thursday, and several more rounds are expected.

What to Know

  • The first of four or potentially even five snowstorms over the next 7-10 days dropped several inches of snow on Greater Boston on Thursday, with some areas of northern New England getting up to a half a foot of accumulation
  • See snowfall totals here, including the jackpot towns
  • More than 200 crashes were reported on Massachusetts state roads as of Thursday evening
  • The next storm is expected to move in Saturday night and continue through Sunday morning, bringing the potential of 6 inches of snow or more
  • Two and possibly three more storms are in the forecast for next week, with the potential for 2 feet of snow by the time it's all said and done

A winter storm blasted the Boston area on Thursday, dropping between several inches of snow in some places and making for treacherous travel conditions.

And it's just the first of three big storms expected in the next week.

Here's a look at the updates as we got them Thursday:

In the Merrimack Valley, snow cleaning started early Wednesday afternoon in Haverhill, hours before the flakes started falling.

Some, like Michelle Watson, took advantage of the free sand the Department of Public Works offers.

“Everywhere is out so Haverhill DPW is really stepping up and letting everyone come and fill up a couple buckets,” Watson said.

The Department of Public Works had “about 120 private snowplows and about 15 pieces of city-owned equipment out there,” said Robert Ward, the department's director. He also said they had less salt than they would like but will be getting around 2,000 tons in the next few days.

Snow turned to drizzle around lunch time in Worcester.

“I woke up this morning and there was nothing on the street and it was like, alright, they are predicting the storm we're not going to get — by the time I got dressed I looked and thought, not going out! The storm had started,” said Patti Britt as she shoveled the driveway of her home. “I got grandchildren, I'm glad they’re not at school. I’m glad the buses, the kids are safe. That’s the most important thing.”

Worcester Public Schools cancelled classes on Thursday due to the forecast of snow and ice.

The Worcester Public Library also closed several branches. The Worcester Senior Center at Providence Street was closed as well, but the YMCA kept its doors open as a winter warming center.

A heavily damaged car on a tow track after crashing in Gray, Maine, during snowy conditions on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025.

A pair of car wrecks briefly shut the Maine Turnpike during the snowstorm, state police said.

Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries and four of the vehicles had to be towed from the accidents in Gray, according to police. They shared images of several damaged vehicles.

The first pileup took place about 12:39 p.m., with three vehicles crashing at mile marker 59. Then, police said, with traffic slowing, five passenger vehicles and two trucks crashed.

It took an hour to clear the road, and police urged drivers to keep being cautious, or, better yet, avoid driving, amid slick conditions.

Over 200 crashes on Mass. state roads (so far)

Massachusetts State Police say they've responded to 210 car crashes on highways and other state roads amid Thursday's snow storm.

And that's as of 3:05 p.m., with icy conditions possible on roads into the evening.

The 210 crashes is more than double the number state police responded to on the last two Thursdays, though the number of crashes involving injuries is actually down — just seven were reported this Thursday, compared to 13 on Jan. 30 and 21 on Jan. 23.

To help keep drivers safe amid the dangerous conditions, the speed limit on the Massachusetts Turnpike has been reduced to 40 mph between Framingham and the border with New York state.

Snow much more? Thursday's storm just the start of Boston's snowy stretch

Snow much more? Thursday's storm just the start of Boston's snowy stretch

The Boston area is expected to see significant snowfall Saturday into Sunday. Watch the video to see what else to expect.

Heads up — Thursday's winter storm isn’t the only system we’re tracking in Boston. In fact, several inches of plowable snow are possible this weekend, and next week could deliver even more snow!

Thursday is a First Alert as we continue tracking a mix of snow and freezing rain in the region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until the evening.

See all severe weather alerts in your area here, and track the storm with the interactive radar below.

Snow began falling over Greater Boston earlier Thursday morning. As we continue moving through the day, the snow will transition into freezing rain for parts of the region. A light glaze is possible, but we don’t expect the ice to cripple our area. Still, be careful while walking on sidewalks. Some bridges and overpasses could be slick as well.

Speed restriction now in place on I-90 in Mass. as road conditions deteriorate

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has put a 40 mph speed restriction in place on Interstate 90 from the New York border to mile marker 59.2 in Palmer as weather conditions worsen.

Shortly after noon, MassDOT said the 40 mph speed limit restriction was extended east to Framingham.

MassDOT also issued a winter weather advisory on Thursday morning, advising travelers that snowfall and severe cold are expected to impact travel in many parts of the state through the early part of the evening.

"Travelers should allow for extra travel time and check forecasts for their routes and destinations and, if possible, consider using public transportation in place of a personal vehicle. For Western and Central Massachusetts and the North and South shores, widespread snowfall amounts of 2-4” are forecast. For Cape Cod and the Islands, the snowfall amounts forecast are lower. MassDOT crews have been pretreating roadways in advance of the storm and will be deploying snow removal staff and equipment as necessary across the Commonwealth."

Thursday's storm is expected to drop a mess of snow, ice and rain on New England, and public works crews are preparing.

Crews expect road conditions to rapidly deteriorate throughout the day today.

The focus overnight has been pre-treating the roads with a brining system, to try to create a surface the snow is less likely to stick to. Then as the snow and sleet fall, crews will be salting, sanding, and plowing the roads as needed.

“We also start a brining system, what brining does is kind of help – a bringing system kind of helps reduce what sticks to the roads, so we do some pre-treatment with brining and that kind of helps with lessening the amount of salt that we actually need, but as you can see from our salt pile here, we got deliveries yesterday and today, so we’re ready for this storm," said Jill Lathan, the Somerville DPW commissioner.

The pattern has gone haywire. Admittedly, the next 10 days may give you flashbacks to the infamous snow blitz 10 years ago, but at least in this case, we may be skipping out on the blockbuster snowstorms.

We've issued a First Alert for Thursday, the first of a series of winter storms moving into our area in the coming days.

How many chances for snow do we have in the next week?

Still, FOUR (potentially five) storms in the next seven to 10 days is a lot. While the temperatures won’t be numbingly cold, it will be just cold enough to snow for most of us.
