Traffic cameras showed dozens of emergency vehicles and several ambulances at the scene. The crash appeared to involve a tractor-trailer and multiple other vehicles.

State police said the crash occurred when a tractor-trailer driving west failed to stop for traffic, colliding with about 12 other vehicles. Emergency crews from multiple area police and fire departments responded to the scene.

Thirteen people, including the tractor-trailer driver, were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. One female driver suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified by police as Jon P. Main, 64, of Cranston, Rhode Island, was charged with driving to endanger, resulting in physical injury, and will be arraigned following his release from the hospital.

Eastbound traffic backed up to East Shore Expressway as a result of the crash, and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation also issued an alert on X, saying traffic was being detoured at Exit 1 in Seekonk and delays should be expected.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said in a post on X just before noon that the crash scene had been cleared and traffic was flowing normally again.
