One person killed in fiery crash at toll booth in Bedford, NH

Four lanes were closed on the F.E. Everett Turnpike southbound at the toll booth for about four hours Thursday

One person was killed in a fiery crash at the Bedford toll plaza on the F.E. Everett Turnpike in New Hampshire on Thursday afternoon.

State police responded to a report that a vehicle had crashed and caught fire at the toll plaza at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. Four EZ-Pass lanes were shut down on the turnpike southbound as crews dealt with the crash. Drivers were warned to anticipate delays and avoid the area if possible. The scene wasn't cleared for another three hours.

State police said their initial investigation has determined the involved vehicle, a Merecedes SL 500, was traveling south when it struck a concrete barrier at the toll plaza and subsequently caught fire.

The driver, later identified as Scott Defreitas, 52, of Nashua, was pulled from the vehicle by several witnesses. Life-saving measures were attempted, but he was pronounced deceased on scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
