An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined that his cause of death was a single gunshot to the chest, and the manner of his death was homicide.
The district attorney's office said the shooting occurred around 7:22 p.m. outside an apartment building at 97 High St., and a second man, age 31, was found injured from "what appear to be non-fatal, non-gunshot wounds inside a common hallway." He was taken to a local hospital and has since been released. Police have not released the second man's name.

Authorities said evidence gathered to date shows that the two men were involved in a verbal argument leading up to the shooting, and they are still trying to determine if the person who shot Prouty was acting in self-defense.
Investigators said they have learned that there are several witnesses who might have seen or heard an argument between the two men moments before the shooting, but left the area without speaking with responding officers. They said the two parties directly involved in the incident have been identified and there is no known threat to the general public.
Anyone who witnessed the incident but has not yet spoken with investigators is being asked to call the state police Major Crime Unit at 603-223-3856 or email them at MCU@dos.nh.gov or call Somersworth police at 603-692-3131.
