An 88-year-old man has died after being hit by a vehicle in a parking lot.

An elderly man was killed by a vehicle being driven by a person he'd just gotten coffee with in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon, police said.

The 88-year-old was hit in the area of Park Avenue and Parker Street just before 12:30 p.m., according to Worcester police.

Investigators believe that the 88-year-old had just gotten coffee with the driver, a 69-year-old man, nearby and were returning to their vehicle at a parking lot, police said. The driver got in while the other man waited outside.

The driver is believed to have driver back, then forward, hitting the 88-year-old man, who hasn't been identified. He was rushed to a hospital but pronounced dead.

Police were investigating the incident. It wasn't immediately clear if the driver, who stayed at the scene, was facing charges.

Much of the intersection of Park Avenue and Parker Street was taped off as investigators looked into what happened. Several vehicles appeared to be part of the investigation.
