A man who was shot and killed by police in Nashua, New Hampshire, on Sunday night has been identified, according to authorities.

Officers responded to the Lowe's Home Improvement on Daniel Webster Highway around 8:45 p.m. Sunday for a report of a man who was armed earlier in the evening and was last seen leaving his home in Pelham, the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said Monday.

The officers encountered the man outside of the Nashua store armed with the gun, according to authorities.

"During the ensuing encounter, two officers ultimately discharged less-lethal munitions, and one officer discharged a firearm," the attorney general's office said in a release.

Authorities say life-saving measures were attempted but the man died from his injuries.

The attorney general's office identified the man on Monday as 41-year-old Ryan Prudhomme, of Pelham. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the chest, and the manner of death was homicide, defined as the killing of one person by another.

A popular home improvement store in Nashua, New Hampshire, was the scene of a deadly shooting Sunday night involving the police. New details about what led to this incident were leased Monday.

Nashua residents were surprised to hear about this shooting happening in America's safest city.

“It’s awfully close to home but we are a number 1 city still as far as I’m concerned," Brad Canfield said.

“I’m glad they’re out there doing their job,” Randall Bashta said.

“I’m so sad to hear that. Sad for the family,” Massachusetts resident Alexandra Tate said. "It’s very disconcerting to know that it can happen in such a public place.”

“Jeez that’s right where I work," BJ's sales associate Brian Durkin said. "This area is usually quiet and its usually uneventful at that level."

"Cops were aware that he was carrying, aware that something was bound to happen so hence their response,” Durkin added. "Even while you’re food shopping or doing errands, you’ve got to always be prepared to act quickly.”

Authorities say no officers were physically injured and that there's currently no known threat to the public.

The Nashua Lowe's store was completely blocked off Monday morning — more than seven hours later with a significant police presence still on scene.

A state police crime scene van and several Nashua police officers were seen stationed at either entrance. A white tent was also seen set up Sunday night as officers investigated the circumstances that prompted at least one officer to shoot and kill the man.

The officers involved have been identified by the attorney general's office as officers Joshua Martin, Jay Atchue and Rick Byron of the Nashua Police Department. Martin discharged his gun during the incident, and Atchue and Byron discharged less-than-lethal weapons, firing 40-millimeter direct impact rounds and beanbags, respectively.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, the attorney general's office said. The incident report regarding the incident and whether the officers' use of deadly force was justified will be released once the investigation is completed.
