The westbound Massachusetts Turnpike was blocked for nearly two hours by a rolled-over truck near I-495 on Thursday, officials said, snarling traffic ahead of rush hour.

The incident near the Hopkinton/Westborough line at about 2:30 p.m. led to minor injuries for the driver, a 74-year-old from Worcester, according to Massachusetts State Police. While the Massachusetts Department of Transportation had said the westbound side of the highway would stay closed through the evening commute, police said it was reopened shortly before 4 p.m., ending the highway's detour to Route 9.

"Drivers traveling through the affected areas should avoid the area, expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution," MassDOT said in a statement.

There were injuries and hazardous materials spilled in the crash near I-495, according to the Westborough Fire Department, which shared images from the scene, including a truck on its side in the road, perpendicular to the direction of travel.

Firefighters said that a fuel leak involving the crash was contained and the truck was being moved to one side of the highway so traffic could get by.

State police said the truck had to have its fuel tank drained so it could be repositioned.

Traffic was at a standstill behind the crash, and people were seen getting out of their cars and stretching their legs.
