The railroad crossing's protection system was fully operational and performing as designed.

The driver of the plow was not inside when it was hit by the train. He reportedly jumped out just before the crash.

The driver told his boss that he was plowing the sidewalk and when he got to the tracks one of his wheels got stuck down in a spot where there is no asphalt underneath. As much as he tried to muscle it out he couldn't move it. Then he heard the signal for the gates. When the train horn sounded he bolted, getting about 15 feet away before the train hit.

Keolis, which operates the MBTA Commuter Rail, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

No further information was immediately available.
