The MBTA gave the public a look Thursday at the new trains that will be used on the Red Line.
The new cars are expected to debut in spring of 2020, the MBTA said. The first six are being tested at Cabot Yard in Boston.
"This represents an entire new generation of vehicles for the Red Line," MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said at a press conference Thursday.
The train cars have wider doors, closed-circuit cameras and LED lighting.
The fleet of new Red Line cars will total 252, which Poftak says will mean wait times between trains will decrease to three minutes.
Six new cars went into service on the Orange Line over the summer, but were temporarily taken out of service after a door malfunction. There will be 152 new Orange Line cars in total.
