
A police officer in Milton, Vermont, was injured Wednesday after being shot while responding to a fire.
Vermont State Police initially urged the public to stay away from a stretch of Main Street due to an emergency situation. NBC affiliate WPTZ reported that there was a large police and first responder presence.

State police later said that crews responded to a structure fire at a Main Street address. A gunman opened fire, hitting an officer with the Milton Police Department.
The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

State police said late Wednesday night that the situation, which involved a barricaded person, had "resolved shortly after 11 p.m."
Police said no one was in custody and there was no threat to the public, adding that the names of those involved would be released "following notification of relatives."
Main Street remained closed between Route 7 and the intersection with East Road and North Road late Wednesday night, but police said the presence of law enforcement was starting to be reduced around 11:40 p.m., with the road expected to reopen soon after.
State police said the SWAT team, bomb squad and crisis negotiators were involved in the response.
The town said earlier that the situation was contained.
Milton is a town of about 10,000 north of Burlington.
