A motorboat and a sailboat collided near Grape Island, seriously injuring two people.

Two people were taken to the hospital Friday after a boat crash off the coast of Grape Island in Weymouth, Massachusetts, officials said.

The crash happened on Hingham Bay. Fire officials said one person was rushed to a hospital in Boston and another was taken to a hospital on the South Shore, both suffering serious injuries.

Both of those people were on a sailboat that was involved in a collision with a motorboat.

"Motorboating is extremely dangerous in general," said Scott Barber, who sails in the area routinely. "When you're under sail power, you usually don't have the ability to navigate as well as a motorboat, so I just hope both parties involved were paying attention best they could."

A witness who saw the two victims brought back to shore in Weymouth tells NBC10 Boston it appeared a woman was unconscious and a man had a serious gash to his leg.

A crash between a motor boat and a sailboat sent two people to hospitals.

"It's probably not paying attention," said a boater in Weymouth who did not want to be identified. "There's probably no other way it could happen, it shouldn't happen."

Authorities say the sailboat sank. It will have to be salvaged, because if it remains in the water, it will be a hazard to navigation.

Boaters say it was calm out on the water Friday, visibility was good, and they're trying to figure out how this accident could happen.

"By Grape Island, it can certainly be very narrow," said Barber. "And if you're not paying attention, you can get into a situation you can't get out of."

Investigators haven't said exactly how the crash unfolded and if anyone will face any charges.
