Police found two other people who were shot on scene, but their injuries were not life-threatening. The two victims were taken to the hospital by Boston EMS. Three other victims took themselves to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Crime scene tape blocked off several roadways Monday morning, including the corner of Irma and Arbutus Streets as well as Woodrow Avenue. Evidence markers could be seen on the ground.

"I don’t know any party where you say let’s go get dressed and let’s go shoot,” one woman said Monday.

”I got up around 12:30 to call the police because I thought they were fireworks.” another woman said.

”I was like dang. I ain’t going out there," a man said.

Neighbors and partygoers tell NBC10 Boston that about 100 people gathered Sunday in the backyard of the Irma Street home to celebrate Jamaican Independence Day.

Candles now mark the spot in the front of the building where the woman died. A bullet hole is visible on a car nearby.

"I’m told it was very sudden. And that this is a community where people were coming together and looking to have some fun and celebrate being together and this was completely unexpected," Boston mayoral candidate Michelle Wu said.

One person has died and several other people were injured after a shooting in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood overnight.

The circumstances of what happened are still under investigation. Neighbors say there have been a series of parties on Irma Street in recent months -- large gatherings that are promoted on social media.

”I was with my family celebrating your birthday and no one leaves dead or gets shot." Boston mayoral candidate Andrea Campbell said. "These are massive scale events that should not be in someone’s backyard.”

At least one partygoer told NBC10 Boston that Sunday’s gathering was not one of these large scale events.

"This is a family gathering. They have it every year so like the people on the street know about this party that they have every year," she said.

The woman who was killed and the other victims have not been identified. So far there have been no arrests.
