Hazmat situation prompts evacuation of North Andover middle school

Contractors were removing a tank that had formerly contained materials used in the science labs when they realized it might not have been fully emptied

A middle school in North Andover, Massachusetts, was evacuated Thursday morning due to a hazardous materials incident, according to the school district.

Town and school officials said in an updated posted on Facebook at 11:22 a.m. that all studnets and staff at the North Andover Middle School are safe and no injuries were reported.

They said contractors at the middle school were removing a tank on Thursday morning that had formerly contained materials used in the science labs when they realized it might not have been fully emptied.

Working with North Andover police and fire, the middle school was evacuated.

"There is no immediate danger and no exposure for students or staff," officials said "The building was evacuated as a precaution so that the hazmat team could do a full evaluation."

They said North Andover fire, police and emergency medical services remain at the scene

Students remain off campus, officials said, and more information regarding dismissal procedures will be shared with families.
