More than a dozen 911 callers reported the crash at about 10:40 a.m., according to fire officials. The cause of the crash was under investigation and utility workers were working on fixing electrical poles that were knocked down.

Brooks told NBC10 Boston Tuesday afternoon that the two people were critically hurt and that speed was likely a factor.

"It was a horrific crash with extensive, extensive damage to both vehicles," he said, calling it the most serious crash he'd seen in some time.

Brooks and firefighters shared images of the crash on social media. They showed a white vehicle, its roof ripped off, and a damaged red vehicle off the side of the road.
