State trooper injured after alleged drunk driver hits cruiser on Storrow Drive

An accused drunk driver rear-ended a Massachusetts State Police cruiser late Monday night on Storrow Drive, sending a trooper to the hospital, according to authorities.

The driver of a 2013 Acura SUV rear-ended the cruiser, causing significant damage to both vehicles, shortly after 11 p.m. Monday on the eastbound side of Storrow Drive near Kenmore Square, according to a spokesperson with Massachusetts State Police.

The trooper was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Acura was identified by police as Melvin Lopez, 32, of Chelsea. State police said he was arrested and is now facing several charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol.

Lopez pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning in Boston Municipal Court. Bail was set at $500, with a condition that he not drink alcohol, subject to random testing. His license has been suspended.
