Woman Hit by Garbage Truck in Somerville Suffers Serious Injuries

The accident was reported around 2:30 p.m. on McGrath Highway at Somerville Avenue

A woman was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after police said she was struck by a garbage truck while crossing the street in Somerville, Massachusetts.

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a garbage truck in Somerville, Massachusetts, on Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 1:45 p.m. on McGrath Highway at Somerville Avenue.

The 34-year-old woman was taken to a Boston area hospital with serious injuries, according to police. A state trooper at the scene said she was alert and talking with paramedics and is expected to be OK.

Police at the scene said the woman was hit by a garbage truck trying to turn right as she was crossing the street while using a marked crosswalk.

Surveillance video from a nearby car dealership showed the dump truck turn from Medford Street onto McGrath Highway.

Police said the driver of the truck is a 50-year-old man from Hyde Park.

The truck has been taken to a local auto yard for inspection by state police. Authorities said charges for the driver are possible.
