The Plymouth District Attorney's Office said in an update on Friday afternoon that the man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he died.

The incident began around 3:31 a.m., when Brockton police received a 911 call saying that a man was trying to open the car doors of motor vehicles parked along Monson Street. The caller described the man as wearing a dark-colored jacket with fur.

Around that same time, police received another 911 call from someone saying they had heard gunshots outside their home and saw someone lying face down on the sidewalk out front.

Detectives from the Brockton Police Department and state police assigned to the district attorney's office are investigating. Investigators said they do not believe the incident was a random act of violence.
