A major thoroughfare in the Boston area was closed Friday afternoon and evening for emergency utility repairs, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Route 1 southbound was closed at Walnut Street in Saugus, MassDOT said. The ramps from Interstate 95 northbound and southbound to Route 1 were also closed.

As of about 9:30 p.m., all lanes had reopened.
The department did not say what type of repair work was being conducted.
