Several fire agencies have contained a massive brush fire that broke out in Haddam Friday.

Firefighters were called to a home on Tinker Road around 3:20 p.m. for a reported vehicle fire. Once there, crews found a fully involved pick up truck on fire. The vehicle fire then spread to a neighboring storage barn and then an open lean-to and one-story house.

Difficult terrain and limited driveway access reportedly prevented firefighters from being able to get water immediately to the fire.

The Tinker Road home collapsed and is a total loss, according to fire officials. The homeowner was home when the fire broke out, but they were able to get out safely. No injuries were reported.

As firefighters worked to attack the structure fire, fire officials said about five acres of woodlands began burning near the home. High winds and a dry forest floor caused the fire to rapidly spread across Tinker Road and Ruth Hill Road into the state forest land.

Fire officials and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection decided to intentionally set a controlled fire to stop the fire spread by creating a barrier. The fire went from the Route 82 Connector to a powerline trail and covered an area of about 200 acres, officials said.

Fire crews were staged along the area to prevent it from spreading to homes and crews extinguished the fires that spread to yards in the area.

The brush fire was contained at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday with some areas left to free-burn.

“The brush fire will continue to burn and there likely will be significant smoke in Haddam for the next few days,” said Haddam Fire Chief Sam Baber in a statement.

If anyone in the area notices a fire outside of the burned area or near their property, they should call 911.
