Barnstable police said one person received minor lacerations from broken glass after shots were fired at the Craigville Beach parking lot in Centerville.

Gunfire erupted Saturday evening at a beach on Cape Cod as many were in the area to celebrate a warm and sunny Memorial Day weekend.

Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Rescue said shots were fired at Craigville Beach in the village of Centerville. Barnstable police confirmed Sunday that the department received a report of gunshots in the beach parking lot in the early evening hours.

The Barnstable Police Department's patrol and criminal investigation divisions both responded to the scene to investigate.

Rescue officials said Saturday night that no one was taken to the hospital. Police said Sunday that one person was injured, however, receiving minor lacerations from broken glass during the incident.

No information on a possible suspect was released, but police said this incident appears to be targeted.

Barnstable police said Monday that although it seems to have been a random incident, the chief has ordered further security checks of all the town's public beaches by the patrol division.
