Shuttle buses have been phased out after a train with a mechanical problem at Central Square caused major delays on parts of the Red Line on Friday morning, the MBTA says.
The issue was reported shortly before 9:30 a.m. Numerous police and fire vehicles responded to a report of a fire inside the T station. There was a smoke condition, but emergency crews have since cleared the scene.

Shuttle buses replaced service between Harvard and Park Street for about two hours, causing delays of an hour or more for riders. The MBTA said in a tweet around 11:30 a.m. that shuttle buses were being phased out and train service had resumed with delays.

Riders on the South Shore were told to consider Commuter Rail service from Braintree, Quincy Center or JFK/UMass into downtown on Friday morning.
