Chicken truck goes through median on Mass. Pike, driver seriously injured

The driver of the truck was seriously injured; the driver of the pickup truck that hit him faces multiple drug-related charges

There were significant traffic delays on the Massachusetts Turnpike on Tuesday morning due to a crash in Charlton, state troopers said shortly before 10 a.m.

The crash involved multiple vehicles — including a tractor-trailer that went through the median, troopers said.

State police said they initially responded to reports of a serious crash between a M2106 box truck and a Dodge 1500 pickup truck shortly after 9 a.m.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified by police as Nathan A. Miranda, 37, of Winchendon, was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, operating under the influence of drugs causing serious injury, drug possession and other motor vehicle offenses. He was booked at state police headquarters and will be arraigned at a later date.

The driver of the box truck, a 34-year-old Everett man, was trapped in his truck when it flipped on its side as a result of the crash. He was removed and taken to a hospital by medical helicopter with serious injuries. An update on his condition was not immediately available.

Major delays were reported on both sides of the highway. As of 3 p.m., the left lane remained closed both eastbound and westbound for cleanup and guardrail repair. Delays were expected to continue through the afternoon commute.
