Deadly Crash Among Dozens Reported Across Mass. During 2022's First Snowstorm

There were dozens of crashes across the Greater Boston area Friday morning as the first big winter storm of the year hit its stride during the morning commute.

A New Bedford man was killed in a crash on Route 140 in Freetown when his car went off the road and crashed into a tree. Police believe the weather was a main cause of the crash. The victim was identified as Jason Saccocia.

Shortly after 7 a.m., a crash involving a jackknifed bus on the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound in Newton had multiple lanes blocked.

Many restrictions were in place along roadways throughout Massachusetts, including the closure of the HOV lane on Interstate 93 between Boston and Quincy on Friday.

In an interview with NBC 10 Boston, Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver warned against nonessential travel on Friday.

"I think the bottom line for the roadways today is stay off them if you can, don't make any discretionary trips," Gulliver said.
