State police had initially said in a tweet at 12:46 p.m. that they were searching for an "alleged abduction suspect" in the area between Massachusetts Avenue and Route 2.

Witnesses told police a woman who appeared to be in distress was forced into a car near the Riverview Restaurant in Billerica.

The driver took off with the victim, ending up in Cambridge, where much of the search was focused on the Alewife MBTA stop and its parking garage, as well as the nearby Alewife Brook Reservation.

At one point, according to witnesses, police approached the vehicle, but the suspect drove off.

The car was eventually found with the victim, who was described as being unhurt but appearing distraught.

The man allegedly took off on foot. Despite a large search involving helicopters and dogs, he was not found.

Residents are asked to call 911 if they see anyone suspicious.
