State trooper dragged and struck by car he tried to stop, suspect caught after manhunt

A Massachusetts State Police trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being hit and dragged by a car in Holyoke

A Massachusetts State Police trooper was struck and dragged by a car on Friday afternoon, and authorities say a suspect is in custody after a manhunt.

State police said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Interstate 91 north when the trooper tried to stop a vehicle at the Holyoke rest area. The trooper was struck and dragged, but was able to disengage to the vehicle.

The trooper was injured and has been taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle fled the scene and crashed further up the road. The driver ran into the woods.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., police found and arrested 45-year-old Michael Williams Jr. of Greenfield.

Charges against Williams include assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, negligent operation, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of a crash causing injury, failure to stop for police, resisting arrest, speeding and a marked lanes violation.
