Man in custody after exchanging gunfire with police from Taunton bathroom

Taunton police said there was no ongoing threat to neighbors after the incident on Hodges Avenue

A man was arrested after exchanging gunfire with officers during a standoff in a bathroom at a Taunton, Massachusetts, apartment, on Wednesday morning, police said.

No one was hurt, and the standoff ended after about an hour, according to Taunton police.

They were called to the Hodges Avenue apartment about 9 a.m. for a wellbeing check and found the man, whom they haven't publicly identified, barricaded in a bathroom. He shot at officers, and at least one officer fired back.

The home and area were evacuated as backup was brought in, but the man surrendered peacefully during negotiations, according to police.

The incident is believed to be isolated, with no threat to the community.
