Three Yarmouth, Massachusetts, middle school students were taken to the hospital after they became ill after eating a chocolate bar while on the school bus Thursday morning.

Yarmouth police said the school resource officer at Dennis-Yarmouth Middle School was notified around 9:10 a.m. that a student in the nurse's office was experiencing a reaction to an unknown substance they had consumed. The student reported consuming part of a chocolate bar on the bus before arriving at school.

Two other students had consumed the same chocolate bar but were not showing any symptoms.

The Yarmouth Fire Department was contacted, and all three students were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for medical evaluation.

Michael Bovino, principal of Dennis-Yarmouth Middle School, confirmed that three students were hospitalized "after ingesting something that they ate on the bus." He said the students have all been connected with their families and are doing well.

The students were being evaluated by hospital staff, he said, but none were in critical condition.

Yarmouth police said they are working closely with school officials to investigate the incident.

No further details were released.
