Massachusetts State Police have announced that a 19-year-old was taken into custody following a multi-car crash at the base of the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne that killed a 79-year-old woman and seriously injured an 83-year-old man Friday night.
According to police, Paul Myers, of Plymouth, was driving in the left lane on Route 6 west shortly before 7 p.m. when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him by illegally shifting into the right lane. His vehicle didn't have enough clearance while attempting to change lanes, however, and he crashed into a Toyota Corolla already traveling in the right lane.

The impact caused the Corolla to hit the curb, spin across the median and crash head-on into a car traveling in the opposite direction.
The Corolla passenger, identified as 79-year-old Martha Sheldon, died in the crash, police said Saturday as they extended their condolences to her family. The Corolla driver, identified only as an 83-year-old man, sustained serious injuries.

Following the crash, Myers was arrested for suspected operating under the influence of drugs. Further details were not immediately available.
Both lanes of travel to Cape Cod and the left lane of travel off the Cape were closed for several hours Friday night. The crash remains under investigation.
