A group of adults and kids that was fishing off Orleans, Massachusetts Saturday got a big surprise when a great white shark jumped from the water feet from their boat.
"Just a crazy fishing story that the shark came to the boat and gave us a pretty good scare," Doug Nelson, who captured the video on his phone, said.
The video shows young boys at the back of the boat reeling in their catch when a shark leaps from the water. Nelson's son, Jack, was standing just feet from where the shark left the water. The video shows him jumping back as the shark breaks the surface.
"Holy shizzle! Dad that was at my fingers. I almost don't have arms," Jack says in the video.
NBC10 Boston reached out to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, which confirmed that the fish was in fact a great white.
"I didn't know what to do. It was shocking," Jack said.
But the five boys, and best friends, who were on the boat can't stop replaying the big moment.
"It was crazy just seeing the head and you could see the marks from the teeth."
While the shark beat them to that particular fish, they didn't go home empty-handed. The group caught 23 fish in total. The biggest one was 36-inches, and they had that one for dinner.
This isn't the first time this summer that a shark has been seen in the waters off Cape Cod. There have been more than 100 shark sightings this summer, with more than 30 in the past week.
